Internship Report: Online Search and SEO

Abstract: 

From September 2013 to December 2014 I spent four months in London, United Kingdom, for my internship as part of the NMDC program. I entered the world of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) in the Marketing Department of MintTwist. MintTwist is a full-service digital agency based in Kentish Town, London, who are specialists in website design, development, and digital marketing.

I always had a preference for United Kingdom. I am going there ever since I was little. It simply attracts me: the people, the language, the culture. When I had the opportunity to do my internship abroad, my choice was quickly made. Because of my background in both website design and website development, I wanted to broaden my knowledge about digital marketing. I came in contact with MintTwist and it happened to be a match made in heaven.

 
As an intern I joined their marketing team working on everything related to marketing, such as planning, creating, and researching SEO strategies and practices. Furthermore, I would be able to investigate in Google and online search in a research that would serve as the underlying theme during my internship. Next to my practical duties I worked one weekday on this research. The practical duties helped me to gain further insights in Google and SEO techniques, which are used in this research.

 
Because the company has specialists in website design, development, and online marketing they can help clients build and maintain their website from scratch. These different areas are highly intertwining in terms of collaboration and dependence of each other. While I was working particularly in the marketing area I also had to work within the other areas in order to create the best possible solution for a project. This made my role comprehensive, varied, and challenging.

 
In my research I am investigating in the role of SEO regarding the development of online search, and Google in particular. By analysing SEO techniques, Google’s interface, and search politics I was able to highlight the important role of SEO that cannot be underestimated when looking at the development of Google’s search engine and online search in general. I argue that there is a mutual state of interaction between SEO and Google’s search engine that results in an improved search algorithm and thus a better user experience. During my internship in the marketing department I really felt part of the MintTwist team. I am very thankful to my supervisor and colleagues for stimulating me and giving me responsibilities during these four months. I developed my digital marketing skills and, of course, my communication skills in English language.

 
MintTwist rewarded my choice in going to the United Kingdom for my internship. I have learned so much on both a professional and a personal level. I am thankful for this opportunity and will definitely cherish this experience.
